52 Sabbaths
I agree with Crystal Paine, who’s been inspiring me lately. Yearly goals make life better. I sat down as 2011 turned into 2012 and came up with my own list. Most relevant to this blog is my goal to celebrate 52 sabbaths this year. I’ve been reading about Sabbath observance for years. Tilden Edwards. Karen Mains. Judith Shulevitz. And of course, Abraham Joshua Heschel. But no matter what I read, I haven’t had the discipline to actually order my life accordingly. For some reason, I research rest… instead of resting. Silly, right?
I hope this year that will change. Whether it does, or whether it doesn’t, I’ll at least be going public with the goal and the follow-through.
Since I adopted this goal after New Year’s Day, the first of my sabbaths will be coming up this Sunday, the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. It will be a great day… an Epiphany pageant, five baptisms… and a time of renewal. At least, that’s my prayer. Our Epiphany family dinner will be on Saturday, January 7th, since my husband is working both Friday and Sunday. I’m hoping to persuade the kids that a house blessing on Sunday afternoon will be great fun. We shall see!
